Pulwama: A complete shutdown was observed in Pulwama and adjacent hamlets on the ninth consecutive day today to demand the installation of a memorial for militants at Shaheed Park in the town. All the business establishments and shops were closed while traffic remained off the roads.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that on Friday government forces including local police and Para-military Central Reserve Police Force were deployed in strength to thwart possible post-Friday protests.

Reports said that shortly after Friday prayers, groups of youth pelted stones on the forces at Prichoo.

Police burst tear smoke shells to disperse them. The clashes between police and youth continued for hours.

A complete shutdown was also observed in the adjacent hamlets of the district including Tahab, Naira, Rahmoo, Karimabad and Pinglena.

“The strike would continue till we are not allowed to erect the memorial board at Shaheed Park,” some youth from Pulwama said.
