KULGAM — Police, in joint operations with the Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF, arrested five persons in Kulgam and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession, officials said on Wednesday.

The operation was launched at Khrewan Chadder on the basis of credible inputs, leading to the arrest of five persons, an official told the news agency KNO.

The recoveries included two pistols, three magazines, 40 rounds of 9mm ammunition and three grenades, the official said.

The arrested persons were identified as Tajamul Hussain Mir, son of Manzoor Ahmed Mir of Gufbal; Rehmat Ali Naikoo, son of Gh Hassan Naikoo of Khrewan; Tehrim Ahmed Bhat, son of Mushtaq Ahmed Bhat of Khrewan; Manzoor Ahmed Bhat, son of Gh Hassan Bhat of Khrewan Chadder; and Kifiyat Ahmed Dar, son of Ab Rasheed Dar of Maltalhama, Kulgam.

A case has been registered under relevant sections of law and further investigation is underway, officials said.

In a separate operation in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, security forces recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from an old hideout in the Nagda Nar forest area of Handwara.

A top officer said a joint team of Handwara Police, Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF conducted a search operation in the forest area based on specific information.

During the search, the team detected and destroyed an old hideout and recovered one AK-47 rifle, three grenades, 857 AK rounds, 192 PIKA rounds, eight AK magazines, one silencer and 83 pistol rounds, besides other material, the officer said.

FIR No. 232 has been registered under relevant sections of law in connection with the recovery, and further investigation has been initiated.

The two operations were carried out separately in south and north Kashmir and remain subject to ongoing investigation.
