Iran rejects US ultimatum on Strait of Hormuz as conflict intensifies

JERUSALEM — Iran has formally rejected a 48-hour deadline issued by US President Donald Trump to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, further deepening the volatility of a conflict that has now persisted for over a month.

The rejection comes amid a significant escalation in military hostilities. On Monday, Iran confirmed the death of Majid Khademi, the head of its intelligence organization, in a joint operation involving the US and Israel. This strike follows a series of high-level losses for Iran, which has seen several top officials killed since the onset of hostilities on February 28.

President Trump, utilizing social media to communicate his demands, had threatened severe consequences, including strikes against Iranian power plants and infrastructure, should the waterway remain obstructed.

Analysts suggest that the Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of the conflict; experts note that control over this maritime chokepoint is a cornerstone of Iran’s defensive strategy to counter superior military forces.

Despite the sustained military pressure, the conflict remains deadlocked. While the US and Israel have successfully degraded Iranian air defenses and targeted its military leadership, Iran continues to employ what analysts call an “escalation doctrine”. By engaging in horizontal warfare—utilizing lower-cost drones and regional proxies—Iran has sought to spread the conflict and prolong the fighting, preventing a decisive “end game”.

Meanwhile, the geopolitical fallout continues to widen. European nations have largely maintained a detached stance, viewing the conflict as one they wish to avoid, placing the NATO alliance in a complex diplomatic position regarding its security commitments.

Experts warn that this ongoing crisis is reshaping global alliances, with uncertainty growing over the long-term reliability of traditional security umbrellas as the conflict shows no clear sign of resolution.
