Women’s Day: Two girls commit suicide in Kashmir

SRINAGAR — Two girls today committed suicide in different parts of Kashmir Valley on the day when the whole world is observing International Women’s Day.

In the first incident, a teenage girl committed suicide by hanging herself at her home in Danamazar area of Srinagar.

According to reports, the girl (name withheld), aged 18, hanged herself with the ceiling fan of her room. “She died on the spot,” sources said.

A police team rushed to the spot and proceedings were started to know the reason for her suicide.

Another incident was reported from Bandipora where a 17-year-old girl committed suicide after consuming some poisonous substance at her home.

Officials said that the girl (name withheld), a resident of Ajas village, after consuming some poisonous substance was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment where from she was referred to Community Health Centre (CHC) Sumbal.

However, doctors at the health centre in Sumbal declared her dead. “The reason for the suicide was not immediately known,” an official said.

A senior police officer confirmed the incident and said they are investigating the incident and the reason behind the extreme step was yet to be ascertained.
