Gunfight in Shopian ends with the killing of two militants

SHOPIAN — Two militants were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian village on Saturday.

Confirming the killing of two militants in Kilbal village of Shopian, a senior police officer told Kashmir News Trust that both were affiliated with banned militant outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. He said the identity of the militants is being ascertained.

Earlier, a gunfight broke out between militants and joint forces at Kilbal village. A joint team of Police, soldiers from 34 Rashtriya Rifles, and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

Militants were asked to surrender, however, they refused. In the ensuing gunfight, both the trapped militants were killed.

The data available with KNT reveals that 15 militants, an infiltrator and a cop were killed in seven encounters this month. These gunfights had broken out in Shalimar Srinagar, Okey, Pariwan and Husanpora villages of Kulgam, Chandgam Pulwama, Zolwa village of Chadoora Budgam and Kilbal Shopian.
