NHPC warns of Chenab discharge fluctuations during Salal silt flushing

REASI — The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has warned residents of Reasi district about fluctuations in the discharge of the Chenab River during reservoir silt flushing at the Salal Dam.

General Manager (Electrical), Salal Power Station, Sanjay Kumar Jain said the reservoir silt-flushing operation commenced late Monday, following which the discharge in the Chenab would rise and fluctuate.

The advisory covers areas upstream of Salal Dam, including Dharan, Thanpal, Arnas, Sai, Lanjan, Narloo, Gari and Salmot, besides other adjoining villages.

Residents in downstream areas, including Dalm, Gujjar Kothi, Siyad Baba, Bidda, Kachhi Khera, Talwara, Nambla, Vijaypur, Bara Dari, Patta, Kashi Patta, Jedhi, Panasa, Babber, Chumandian, Dera Baba Banda Bahadur and Seri, have also been cautioned.

NHPC advised the public to stay away from the river during the silt-flushing operation and said the movement of people, vehicles, cattle and other animals into the river would not be permitted.

Residents have also been advised to exercise caution and avoid approaching the banks of the Chenab during the operation.

Bathing and fishing in the river have been prohibited during the period, according to the advisory.

NHPC said the discharge from Salal Dam would fluctuate while the silt flushing was underway and cautioned the public against entering the river or undertaking activities in and around the watercourse.

Authorities have been asked to create public awareness in the affected areas and ensure that the precautionary measures remain in place during the operation.
