JAMMU — A massive fire swept through Shiv Market near Jammu Railway Station overnight, gutting around 50 shops and a hotel as 13 fire tenders battled the blaze for nearly eight hours.
Dry fruit outlets, bakeries, electronics shops, lodges and other commercial establishments were among those destroyed in the fire, causing substantial losses to traders operating in the busy market.
The fire broke out around midnight on Sunday, prompting an emergency response from the Fire and Emergency Services. Multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and firefighting operations continued for hours before the blaze was brought under control.
Smoke was still seen billowing from the affected premises in the morning, underscoring the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
The firefighting teams worked to contain the flames and prevent further damage to neighbouring establishments, which included shops dealing in various goods and accommodation facilities.
A short circuit is suspected to have triggered the blaze, but the exact cause has not yet been officially established.
The extent of the financial losses is also yet to be formally assessed.
With around 50 shops and a hotel gutted, the fire has left several traders facing substantial losses, while the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
