Salary Increase - Pay Hike

SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday issued a formal order enhancing the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), from ₹12,300 to ₹25,000, with retrospective effect from October 1, 2026.

Government Order No. 747-JK(HME) of 2026 was issued by the Health and Medical Education Department on October 21, following concurrence from the Finance Department on October 20.

The revision increases the monthly stipend by ₹12,700, or approximately 103.25%, over the previous amount.

According to the order, the enhancement applies to MBBS and BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates undergoing internships in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The order states that the sanction for the increase has been accorded with effect from October 1, 2026. The Finance Department’s concurrence was conveyed through U.O. No. FD-Code/69/2026-AO-1068 dated October 20, 2026.

The formal notification comes a day after it was reported that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had approved the stipend enhancement and that the government order was awaited.

Despite the reported approval on Tuesday, protesting interns had said they would continue their indefinite strike until the government issued a formal written order. They had cited previous assurances and delays in implementation as reasons for maintaining the agitation.

With the issuance of Wednesday’s order, the interns’ demand for a formal written notification has been met.

However, the interns’ decision on whether to withdraw their indefinite strike following the order was not immediately available.
