IUST to host eminent experts during five-day national workshop

Awantipora: For enabling researchers to analyze the algorithms & assumptions for excelling in research, a five-day national level Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Research Trends in Information Technology” organised jointly by the Department of Computer Science and Department of Computer Science Engineering, Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST) Awantipora in collaboration with Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) III began here today.

The workshop is expected to cover key research areas in Computer Science with distinguished personalities from eminent institutions across the country sharing their research expertise with the participants.

Prof. Uma Shanker Tiwary from IIT Allahabad, Prof. (Dr.) Vasudha Bhatnagar from Delhi University, Dr. Partha Pratim Roy from IIT Roorkee, Prof. Gurpreet Singh Lehal form Punjab University, Prof. S Balasundram from JNU, Prof. A Quiyum Ansari from JMI, Dr. Jagdish Chand Bansal from South Asian University and Prof. Debasis Giri form MAKAUT will be key resource persons for various technical sessions of the programme.

The programme was formally inaugurated by Vice Chancellor, IUST, Prof. Mushtaq A Siddiqi Tuesday in presence of various experts, university officials, Deans and Heads of various departments, dignitaries and participants from various universities and colleges from within and outside the state.

Addressing the gathering at the inaugural session, Prof. Siddiqi lauded the idea of such programmes as they create a dynamism for updating academia and research and said, “IUST is continuously boosting various activities related to the promotion of research that is paving way for academic excellence in the state. Our students and researchers must engage with the research like the works of the Nobel laureate Prof. Georges J.F. Köhler and so on who are an inspiration for generations.”

Prof. Siddiqi who was the Chief Guest on the occasion also urged teachers and researchers to go back to the basics and build a strong foundation for pursuing quality research. He said, “Best minds grasp a comprehensive theoretical knowledge of domain because that sprouts the best of ideas and you will be able to think out-of-box that eventually leads to innovations and discoveries.”

Dean, Academic Affairs Prof. A M Shah, who was the Guest of Honour stressed upon the continuity of similar workshops and trainings in the university to build the morale of teachers for undertaking positive research. He said, “IUST is designed to focus on creating a superior environment to help people who possess innovation to map their innovations into practical outcomes because that yields better, quality and more pragmatic research outcomes.”

Talking about importance of conducting such workshops, Professor IIT Allahabad Prof. (Dr.) Uma Shanker Tiwary key expert during the workshop put on record his appreciation for the organizers. She said, “Quality Research is an integral part of academia and IUST is making significant contribution in the field of research especially in the subjects of engineering and technology and it should become a part of the national level projects for data collection which needs to be integrated with research by using cloud sourcing.”

Project Coordinator TEQIP-III & Dean Schools of Engineering and Technology, Prof A H Moon while addressing the gathering expressed his satisfaction over the format and design of the workshop.

He congratulated the organizing departments for conceiving and executing the idea of such an important workshop in a short span of time and said, “This FDP addresses all the essentials for good teaching like communication, research, consultancy and management and it will expose the participants with importance of research, modern cutting edge technology and research trends so that they are motivated to pursue a career in research.”

In her welcome address, Head Department of Computer Sciences, Dr. Rumaan Bashir, formally welcomed everyone and stressed upon the participants to make the most out of the various technical sessions and expertise of the eminent resource persons.

She, further, highlighted the main objective of the workshop and said, “The motivation driving the conduct of this FDP is to provide a platform where knowledge could be acquired, ideas could be discussed, perspectives could be shared, concerns could be understood and solutions can be formulated. The designed FDP is expected to cover popular fields of Computer Science including Data Sciences, Artificial Intelligence, Pattern Recognition, Image Processing, Cognitive Science, Computational Complexity, Data Mining, Deep Learning and many more.”

She extended her warm welcome to all those who enrolled for the workshop and also extended her gratitude to all participating institutions from within and outside the state. “An overwhelming response was recorded. The participants include faculty members and researchers from different universities, colleges and centers within and outside the state,” she added.

While concluding the session, Head, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, Syed Mujtaba proposed the Vote of Thanks and prayed for the fruitfulness of the workshop.
