Jammu & Kashmir State Board of School Education - JKBOSE

SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) has announced revised guidelines for altering subjects and seeking re-admission for senior secondary classes starting from the current academic year.

The amendments, sanctioned by the board’s authorities upon the recommendations of a dedicated committee, have been notified to regulate the process of subject changes and re-admissions for students in classes 10th and 12th.

Under the existing norms, candidates in Higher Secondary Examination Part-I and Part-II were permitted to change their subject(s) in which they failed or were placed in the re-appear category during any subsequent session. However, the alteration was confined to subjects within the pursued stream, with a provision allowing shifts from Science or Commerce to Arts but not vice versa. Candidates were also allowed to switch their entire subject stream but were required to forfeit previous results except for English, provided they fulfilled certain conditions.

In the amended regulations, JKBOSE has extended the scope for subject changes, allowing candidates the flexibility to switch their entire subject stream from Arts to Science or Commerce, and vice versa, even before the declaration of results. However, such candidates must understand that this action entails the cancellation of previous results in all subjects, assuming all associated risks and responsibilities.

For students who have already completed Higher Secondary Examination Part-I (Class 11th), switching the entire subject stream is permissible, but it necessitates the cancellation of previous results. These candidates may opt for a fresh private appearance or seek re-admission in Class 11th in regular mode for the immediate subsequent session.

Regarding re-admissions, the existing rules stipulated that candidates who left their institution without appearing in any board examination were eligible for fresh admission in regular mode for the immediate subsequent session. However, those declared under the re-appear or failure category were not eligible for further re-admission as regular students.

Under the amended rules, candidates seeking re-admission in Class 11th in a regular capacity will be allowed to do so in the next subsequent academic session, irrespective of their previous examination status. They have the freedom to choose any stream they desire for re-admission. However, similar to subject changes, previous results for such candidates will be annulled, and they cannot retain awards for previously passed subjects.

Importantly, students who have successfully passed the Higher Secondary Part-II (Class 12th) examination will not be granted re-admission under these regulations.

The amendments aim to streamline the process of subject changes and re-admissions, providing clarity and flexibility for students navigating their academic paths under JKBOSE jurisdiction.
