Srinagar: Parents of students on Sunday urged authorities to close educational institutions for at least two days in wake of the cold snap following snowfall in Kashmir Valley.

Students of Kashmir University and other institutions also demanded authorities to suspend class work as there is a lack of heating arrangement in classes.

“There is a huge drop in temperatures, both day and night, and there is a likelihood that the students may take ill. As such the authorities should order the closure of schools till the weather improves,” Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Old City, Srinagar said.

He said that there is a forecast of improvement in weather in the next couple of days and as such the authorities should close the schools for at least a couple of days.

A number of calls were also received from parents and they expressed the same concerns.

A caller from Kupwara said that some roads are closed and it would be difficult for students to visit the schools for the next few days.

“Practically speaking, it is impossible for authorities to make heating arrangements for students and even if it is presumed that the authorities may do it but still students will suffer while travelling to schools,” said Wani Adil, a resident of Kupwara.

Meanwhile, a number of students from Kashmir University called and said that it would be difficult to attend the classes in biting cold conditions. The varsity authorities should suspend class work for a couple of days. (GNS)
