YAMUNA NAGAR — A soldier from Jammu and Kashmir is among two personnel of the Army’s 1 Para Special Forces who remain missing after a training boat capsized in the Yamuna near Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar district.
The incident occurred during a night training exercise involving five personnel. The Army boat developed a technical problem and was caught in strong currents before becoming trapped in turbulent water near the barrage gates.
Three soldiers managed to reach safety, while two others were swept downstream.
A multi-agency search operation involving the Army, Indian Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) units of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, police and civil administration has been underway.
Two helicopters have also been deployed to conduct aerial searches along the river and adjoining canal network.
Authorities reduced water discharge from the barrage following a request from the Army to facilitate the search operation.
The search has been extended across the Yamuna and downstream waterways amid concerns that the strong current may have carried the missing personnel considerable distances from the accident site.
