
NEW DELHI — The Government of India has officially announced the appointment of Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as the next Chief Justice of India.
As per the notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Department of Justice (Appointments Division), Justice Gavai will assume office on May 14, 2025.
The appointment has been made by the President of India under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution. Justice Gavai, currently serving as a judge of the Supreme Court, will succeed the outgoing Chief Justice.
His elevation is notable as he will be among the few from the Scheduled Caste community to hold the top judicial post.
Known for his integrity and judicial acumen, Justice Gavai has served in the Supreme Court since May 2019 and has authored several landmark judgments.
