SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir government has extended the restrictions on high-speed internet in the Union Territory after the scheduled review.

The renewed order, signed by Shaleen Kabra, Principal Secretary to the government, states that “the internet speed shall be restricted to 2G only” till 11 May.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the internet connectivity was snapped in August 2019 before the Central government broke the erstwhile State into two union territories. Restored gradually, the August ban ended up being the longest internet blackout in any democracy. However, the speed has been capped at 2G only for months.

The order also states that the fixed-line internet shall be available with mac-binding.

Despite repeated appeals by various rights groups and healthcare professionals, the government has not restored the high-speed internet.
