Srinagar: Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday elected Dr. Abdul Hameed Fayaz as Ameer-e-Jamaat of the largest socio-religious party of the state.
Sources in the party said that Fayaz got 79 votes out of the total 160 casted while as Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, the present Ameer-e-Jamaat got 35 votes.
Dr. Abdul Hameed Fayaz is a famous Islamic scholar and a firebrand orator. Born in 1957 in Nadigam village of south Kashmir’s Shopian, Fayaz has a PhD in Islamic Studies.
He joined the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba in 1978 and became Nazim-e-Zillah, Anantnag in 1982. He was also Nazim-e-Aala (President) of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba from 1987 till 1997.
Completing his PhD in Urdu from the University of Kashmir in 2001, he became Ameer-e-Zillah for District Shopian in 2008. In 2009, Dr. Hameed became General Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami.
