Jammu Police responds over custodial death in Jourian

JAMMU — Jammu Police issued a statement on Wednesday to respond to various media reports regarding the death of an individual in police custody in Jourian.

According to a police spokesperson, the individual identified as Sunil Kumar, also known as Sonu and the son of Dewan Chand, hailed from Garhi Bishnah Jourian. Kumar had been brought to the police post in Jourian as per a warrant issued by the “2nd Additional District Judge Jammu” on December 21.

According to the police, the plan was to present him in court on December 22. However, on that day, Kumar was transferred to CHC Jourian as he had become unresponsive. Unfortunately, medical professionals at the CHC Jourian declared him deceased.

The statement emphasized that a Magisterial Probe had been initiated by the Deputy Commissioner of Jammu. It was also mentioned that a team of doctors at GMC Jammu conducted the post-mortem examination of the deceased individual in the presence of a magistrate, with the entire process documented via videography.

Highlighting the surveillance measures, the statement noted that the entire premises, including the lockup of the Police post in Jourian, is under CCTV surveillance.

The police spokesperson aimed to clarify the circumstances surrounding the individual’s death, underscoring the steps taken in the investigation, including the post-mortem examination and the ongoing magisterial inquiry.

This statement comes in response to the “misinformation circulating on social media” regarding the incident, the spokesman said.
