SRINAGAR — The Jammu and Kashmir Government has approved an increase in the superannuation age of judicial officers from 60 to 62 years, subject to assessment by the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
According to an order issued by the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the competent authority has sanctioned the enhancement of the retirement age subject to the High Court evaluating the fitness, eligibility, suitability, performance and continued utility of the judicial officer concerned.
The decision follows a recommendation of the Full Court of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh made on August 10, 2026.
The Full Court had resolved to recommend that the retirement age of judicial officers in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh be raised to 62 years, provided the officers were found fit and eligible for continued service beyond the age of 60.
The government order states that necessary amendments to the relevant rules will be undertaken in consultation with the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The enhancement therefore does not provide an automatic extension of service for every judicial officer beyond the age of 60, with continued service subject to the prescribed assessment by the High Court.
The move follows an earlier direction of the Supreme Court to states and Union Territories to take a decision on raising the retirement age of judicial officers from 60 to 62 years in consultation with their respective High Courts.
