
SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir recorded 308 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in 2024, with nearly three-fourths involving allegations of penetrative or aggravated penetrative sexual assault, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data.
Of the 308 cases, 228 were registered under Sections 4 and 6 of the POCSO Act, which deal with penetrative sexual assault and aggravated penetrative sexual assault.
These cases accounted for about 74 per cent of all POCSO cases registered in Jammu and Kashmir during the year.
Another 65 cases were registered under Sections 8 and 10, relating to sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault.
The data further shows that seven cases were registered under Section 12, concerning sexual harassment of children.
Five cases were registered under Sections 14 and 15, relating to the use of children for pornographic purposes.
Three additional cases were registered under Sections 17 to 22, covering abetment and other related provisions under the Act.
Taken together, these categories account for all 308 POCSO cases recorded in Jammu and Kashmir during 2024.
Overall, Jammu and Kashmir recorded 887 cases of crimes against children during the year, with cases registered under the POCSO Act accounting for 308, or around 35 per cent, of the total.
The figures highlight the scale of cases registered under the child protection law in the Union Territory, with penetrative and aggravated penetrative sexual assault cases forming the largest category.
