Srinagar: Activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the youth wing of the BJP, Monday tried to disrupt a function in New Delhi where Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani was scheduled to interact with scholars of Delhi University.
Hurriyat (G) spokesperson Ayaz Akbar said over phone from New Delhi that dozens of ABVP activists raising slogans tried to attack Geelani and disrupt the function.
The function was organized by Center for Developing of Societies at its Civil Lines office here and 30 scholars of DU were participating. Waving flags, the protesters, who were later removed by police, shouted “Go back” and threw some pamphlets.
“For 15 minutes the ABVP activists attacked Geelani sahib. However, despite that the function went ahead,” Akbar said.
Addressing the function, Geelani according to Akbar said, “Those who don’t have argument commit such type of actions. Kashmir is a human issue and people who have human heart should help Kashmiris. We don’t want independence on the basis of religion, but Kashmir is an international issue.”
“ India approached UN with Kashmir issue itself. We don’t want war but want Kashmir to be settled peacefully. India is holding Kashmir on military power and its claims of democracy prove a hoax in Kashmir ,” he claimed.
The octogenarian separatist leader alleged that there was police and military rule in Kashmir.
“Peoples movement of 2008, 2009 and 2010 were crushed by gun. Peace has been maintained by force,” he alleged.
Quoting figures, Geelani said, “233 killings happened in 2011 and in 2012 three civilians have been killed by the troops till date.”
He said that elections can’t be substitute to self determination “as in presence of seven lakh troops no elections can be free and fair.”
The Hurriyat (G) leader demanded that both India and Pakistan should withdraw its troops from Kashmir. “Then plebiscite should be held under the supervision of UN,” he demanded.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted on micro-blogging site Twitter: “These BSKS & ABVP goons are bloody idiots. Anyone can assault an old man. As if attacking SASG will make the Kashmir issue just disappear.”
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani condemned the ABVP attack on Geelani. “He (Geelani) is an old man and attack on such a person is against humanity. Such attacks are intolerable,” Wani said.
