SRINAGAR — A huge fire engulfed the Maharajpora area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district early this morning, displacing at least six families.
According to witnesses, the fire began in the early hours of Saturday morning and quickly spread to surrounding properties, causing total damage to four residential homes and minor damage to two others. The cause of the fire, however, was not known.
According to local reports, once word of the fire spread in the region, a large number of people, especially youth, rushed to the scene and began a rescue operation, carrying water in buckets and other utensils to put out the flames. Their attempts, however, were in vain until the fire had spread across the locality.
However, the fire was brought under control after a squad of firefighters and police arrived on the scene.
SHO Sopore, Azim Iqbal took stock of damaged buildings in the area while visiting the spot with a police team and assured affected families that all possible support will be given as soon as possible.

Locals said that six families including Bilal Ahmad Malla son of Wali Mohammad Malla, Javaid Ahmad Malla, Gh Nabi Malla son of Gh Mohammad Malla, Mohammad Yousuf Malla son of Ali Mohammad Malla, Nazir Ahmad Malla, Gh Mohammad Malla, Mohd Sahban Malla son of Gh Mohammad Malla, all residents of Maharajpora, lost their residential houses in the huge fire incident.
