Cop, civilian killed in militant attack in Sopore

SOPORE — Militants in north Kashmir’s Sopore town targeted two cops in plain clothes when they were buying meat from a butcher. The attack left a cop and a butcher dead while another cop has been shifted to hospital in serious condition.

SSP Sopore Javaid Iqbal said that two cops, Wajahatullah and Showkat Ahmed, had gone out from police post Warpora and when they were buying meat from a butcher’s shop, suspected militants resorted to firing, injuring all three persons including two cops.

He said that Wajahatullah died on the spot while the butcher Umar Subhan Wagay succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. “Showkat Ahmed, the injured cop, has been hospitalized,“ he said.

The SSP further clarified that it was not an attack on a police post.

Police, shortly after the attack, cordoned off the area and a search operation was in progress till the filing of this report.
