Curfew imposed in Valley as Union Home Secretary confirms Guru’s hanging

Srinagar, Feb 09: Union Home Secretary R K Singh on Saturday said that Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was hanged at Tihar Jail in New Delhi.
Quoting Singh Headlines Today reported that Guru was hanged till death at Jail No. 3 in Tihar at 8:00 am this morning.
The Home Ministry had recommended the death sentence for Guru on January 23, sources said. President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy petition on February 3, the union Home Secretary said.
Nine years ago, in 2004, Afzal Guru was given the death sentence by the Supreme Court. The sentence was scheduled to be carried out on October 20, 2006, but was stayed after his wife filed the mercy petition, which had been pending with the President’s office since then.
Afzal Guru hails from north Kashmir’s Sopore area.
Authorities imposed curfew across the Kashmir Valley to avoid possible law and order problems.
