Shot - Killed - Fired with Gun

SRINAGAR — A DDC candidate was injured after unknown gunmen fired upon him in Sagam area of Kokernag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday afternoon.

Official sources said that militants fired upon a man identified as Anees Ul Islam son of late Fareed Ahmad Ganie, resident of Sagam. He received bullet wound in arm and was immediately rushed to SDH Kokernag for treatment.

As per the sources, he had recently joined Apni Party and was contesting the ongoing DDC election in Sagam block constituency of Kokernag.

Meanwhile, the whole area has been cordoned off to nab the attackers.

However, police said that the DDC poll candidate overlooked “instructions” regarding escort personnel.

“He was allocated cluster accommodation in Khanabal and was informed by Police Station Kokernag on December 03 evening regarding the same after end of scrutiny period,” a police spokesperson said in a statement issued here. “He was also instructed to get escort personnel for campaigning purpose which he did not take,” it added.

All the candidates, the spokesman said, have been instructed to inform the police before going out for campaigning. “The information regarding his movement was not conveyed to PCR or Police Station Kokernag,” it said.

Ganie sustained injuries in finger of his left hand and minor injury on thigh. “His condition is stable,” the spokesman said.

A case (FIR No. 149/20) under Section 307 IPC, 7/27 Arms Act and under Section 16 and 18 of UAPA has been registered at Police Station Kokernag, the spokesman added.
