SRINAGAR — A fierce gunfight broke out between militants and government forces at Gund Checkpora area of Kanipora, Nowgam in central Kashmir’s Budgam district on Friday during pre-dawn hours.
Reports reaching here said that a joint team of Army’s 50 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation at Gund Checkpora area of Kanipora, Nowgam late last night.
Confirming it, a police official said that the cordon was laid following inputs about the presence of some militants.
He said that as the joint team intensified searches at around 3:15 AM, the hiding militants opened indiscriminate fire and hurled grenade. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter.
When reports last came in, the firefight was going on.
