SRINAGAR — A gunbattle is underway between militants and security forces in the Awantipora sub-district of south Kashmir.

Police said the gunbattle erupted in the early hours on Thursday at Nader Tral during a cordon and a search operation, which was launched following an input about militant presence.

In a post on X, police said security forces are on the job.

“Encounter has started at Nader, Tral area of Awantipora. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow,” police said.

This is the second gun battle in South Kashmir since Tuesday. On May 13, three local militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba were killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district.

The slain also included Shahid Kuttay, a local commander of the Lashkar.
