Hizb militant surrenders, OGW held in Kashmir

SRINAGAR — A Hizbul Mujahideen militant surrendered before Baramulla police on Friday. He was later brought to Srinagar along with arms and ammunition for questioning and further investigation.

The surrender comes at a time when security forces have increased the pressure against the militants and the pace of anti-militancy operations in which several militants were killed and over ground workers arrested in recent past.

Sources said that a Hizb militant Junaid Farooq Pandit alias Abu Talha S/O Farooq Ahmed Pandit R/O Hamri in north Kashmir district of Baramulla, surrendered before Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday along with an AK 47 rifle and 4 live rounds ammunition.

He was later shifted to headquarters of Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police in Srinagar for questioning and further investigation.

Junaid, who had joined militancy on 9th June, 2019 and is said to be having a degree of Masters in English, was an active militant since then, having affiliation with proscribed outfit Hizbul Mujahideen.

However, Senior Superintendent of Police for Srinagar Dr Hasseb Mughal rejected the reports of any surrender and said that no such report is available with him; however police in its statement said that Junaid was apprehended by police in Pattan area during a Naka.

Meanwhile, Budgam Police claimed to have arrested a militant associate linked to proscribed outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad.

Police said that, based on a credible input, a check point was established at Khan Sahib Budgam, where an individual Saqib Ahmed Lone R/O Khan Sahib was arrested and incriminated material was recovered from his possession.

As per police records, the accused is involved in assisting active militants operating in the area of Khan Sahib and is also involved in providing logistic support, shelter to Jaish militants.

A case under relevant sections of law has been registered against the accused person in Police Station Khan Sahib and further investigation in the matter is in progress.
