Hurriyat (G) contests police claim; Restarting political activities from today

Srinagar, Apr 05: Hurriyat Conference (G) on Wednesday termed as ridiculous the police claim that Geelani had not been placed under house arrest and that he was free to go anywhere. “Geelani returned to Srinagar from New Delhi on April 2, and he was kept in police custody from Srinagar Airport only. The in-charge of Police Station, Humhama, boarded Geelani’s vehicle and came with him up to his residence where heavy contingent of police had already been deployed,” a spokesman of the amalgam said in a statement. “Had police been telling the truth, it should remove the police personnel and One-Ton vehicle parked outside his residence and make no attempt to put impediments in his political activities,” he added. The spokesman alleged that the police had virtually turned the residence of Geelani into a jail since June 2010 after he was released from Cheshma Shahi Sub Jail here. He announced that Geelani would formally restart his political activities from April 5, Thursday. “Geelani will on Thursday visit Shah Gund, Hajan, and Sopore to extend condolences. On April 6, he will address a public meeting after Friday prayers at Bait-ul-Mukaram, Baramulla,” he said, adding that it would be test case for police. The spokesman also termed as baseless the police claim that Geelani’s residential house is situated at Airport Road and that there it is necessary to keep the police personnel always alert as it (this road) leads to vital installations and buildings. He clarified that Geelani’s residential house is situated at Rehmatabad Colony which is 200 yards away from the Airport road. “There are over 50 residential houses in the Colony but the police are deployed on the main gate of Geelani’s residence alone,” he said, adding that “Hurriyat has already challenged Geelani’s house arrest in the High Court. Police have given this statement in an attempt to prove the falsehood as truth in the court.”
