Illegal Karewa land excavation goes unchecked in Parigam

PULWAMA — The rampant illegal excavation of Karewa land in Parigam village of district Pulwama goes unabated since last 10 years.

In violation of Section 133 of Land Revenue Act, excavation of soil is prohibited in Jammu and Kashmir; however, the excavation of Karewa land in Parigam, Wanpora village of Pulwama continues unabated under the nose of authorities.

Residents of Parigam village said that noise of moving Tippers and Dumpers during night hours disturbs their sleep. “Around 100 Tippers and Dumpers make rounds on Parigam-Pulwama road, Peer Mohalla link road, Parigam-Larav link road during night time,” they said.

Residents also alleged that due to the flow of dust from loaded vehicles, the health conditions of children deteriorate day by day. “The excavation of land has led to vanishing of prestigious dry fruit trees like Almond, Walnut,” they said.

Residents also complained that as evening approaches, more than five JCB machines start loading Tippers and Dumpers till early morning hours and carry it to different places of Srinagar district.

Residents of the affected villages said that repeatedly representatives of villages approached to concerned authorities with this grave issue but all in vain. Residents also alleged that it looks like a nexus of officials and brokers as no action has been taken against law breakers.

Meanwhile, when we contacted the concerned Naib Tehsildar regarding the issue, he said, “We have already sent the documents against them to DC Pulwama to initiate action as they have no permission.”

Moreover, he added that the administration raided the location couple of times and registered FIR against them but still they continued with the illegal excavation.

Further, he assured that he has sought intervention of DC Pulwama in the issue.
