Masquerading as gunman, thief arrested in Pulwama: Police

PULWAMA — Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said that it arrested a thief, who was masquerading as a gunman, in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

A police spokesman in a statement issued to the news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that a few days ago, Police Station Rajpora Pulwama received a complaint from some inhabitants of Rajpora and other adjacent areas that some unknown gunman has been roaming in the area, who has been extorting money and other belongings from the people during night time.

“Accordingly, Police through its social outreach segment cautioned people to stay alert and help the police to nab the culprit. Subsequently, yesterday late evening the culprit was nailed down at Hanjin Bala by Police and public,” the statement said.

As per the details, a person entered into the house of one Ghulam Nabi Wagay, son Muhammad Abdullah, of Hanjin Bala and asked the family members to switch off the lights and keep quiet.

Daughter-in-law of the house owner began to obstruct the culprit, reacting to which culprit, who was holding a small gun and wearing a hiding cloth on his head, started beating her ruthlessly, police said, adding that the whole family alerted the people in the neighbourhood and called for help.

The culprit got frightened and tried to flee from the scene but people reacted instantly and informed Police for help and in the meanwhile, Police party arrived and arrested the culprit and ascertained his whereabouts.

The extortionist/robber was identified as Amir Majid Mir, son of Ab Majid Mir of Rajpora, Police said, adding that a case under FIR number 204/2021, under Section 457, 383, 506, 342 and 323 IPC has been registered and further investigation taken up to dig the relevant facts.
