
SHOPIAN — A newly recruited local militant affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was killed while a soldier was injured in a gunfight that broke out between militants and security forces in the orchards of Shirmal village in Zainapora area in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, officials said on Monday.
An official told the news agency KNO that on specific input about the presence of militants, a joint team of Police, Army and CRPF after receiving information about the presence of militants launched a search operation in the area.
He said that as the joint team of forces intensified searches towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the party, which was retaliated, thus triggering an encounter.
The official said that during the exchange of fire, a militant identified as Aqib Ahmad Pal, son of Mohammed Akram Pal, Resident of Drawani Imamsahib Shopian who was affiliated with LeT and active since September 5 this year was killed. Besides, one soldier of 44 RR was injured, who has been shifted to 92 Base Hospital Srinagar for treatment.
He added that more reinforcement has been rushed to the spot and search operation is going on in the area.
