Nine-year-old boy hangs self to death in Pulwama

Srinagar: In a shocking incident of suicide, a nine-year-old boy hanged himself to death in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Police identified the deceased as Sahfaqat Ahmad Dar, son of Ghulam Mohi-u-Din, resident of Gudoora, Pulwama. Reports said that the boy was shifted to District Hospital Pulwama after committing the act, however, doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead.
“The body of deceased was handed over to his relatives for last rites,” police said, adding that a case was registered in this regard.
Pertinently, the child suicide cases are on rise globally and experts have expressed concern in this regard. “It has been well documented that children exposed to violence, life-threatening events or traumatic losses are at greater risk for depression, alcohol and substance abuse, and suicide,” a study had earlier said.
The study also said that children may display warning signs of suicidal behaviour following tragedies including natural disasters.
Experts have asked parents and teachers of children to be cautious of such warning signs which may include suicide notes, suicide threats, previous attempts, depression, efforts to hurt oneself, inability to concentrate or think rationally, changes in physical habits and behaviour, an changes in personality and friends.
