SRINAGAR — The Power Development Department (PDD) of Kashmir was the target of a cyber attack on Wednesday morning, where customer records and billing data were targeted.

Free Press Kashmir quoted as local source within the department as having said, “At around 4 in the morning, the database servers of PDD’s IT department were attacked.”

As per the official, the concerned department handles the billing details and maintains customer records.

Officials have assured that the billing cycle for this month was already generated and would not be affected by this attack.

Superintendent of Police of the cyber crime wing of Jammu and Kashmir police, Tahir Ashraf neither confirmed nor denied the attack.

However, executive Engineer IT PDD, Neel Kamal Singh confirmed the attack while speaking to a Jammu based media outlet.

“Four out of fifty servers have been attacked. The FIR has been registered in this regard and a joint team of Police and Cyber cell yesterday rushed to assess the damage caused,” Singh confirmed.

“This type of attack is called Ransomware, and the hacker encrypts all the data in the servers and locks it due to which the user fails to access it,” he added.

However, the intensity of the attack is not yet known.
