Police files FIR against ‘deserter’ army sepoy for blaming BJP-led Centre for Pahalgam attack

SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir Police has registered an FIR against a missing Army sepoy, Dlhair Mushtaq Sofi, after his video surfaced on social media, blaming the government, armed forces and intelligence agencies for the Pahalgam massacre of April 22.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has already debunked the viral video.

“A video of an Indian Army soldier, accusing the Central government of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, is going viral on social media. The soldier seen in the video is a deserter and has not been present at his duty since March 2025, nor has he been in contact with his family. Please stay vigilant. Do not fall for such videos,” PIB Fact Check said on X.

J&K Police, meanwhile, said they have converted a missing report of the sepoy Sofi, of 29 Rashtriya Rifles, lodged on March 11 into an FIR “after a video showing him surfaced on social media”.

“The video, verified by his father and uncle, prompted the registration of FIR No. 75/2025 under Sections 197(d), 152 BNS at Police Station Ganderbal,” Ganderbal police said in a statement.

Police said preliminary enquiry also revealed the individual was involved in online gambling and had debts exceeding Rs. 10 lakhs.
