PULWAMA — The residents of Drabgam village in southern Valley’s Pulwama district are up in arms against the authorities for failing to repair the Drabgam-Abhama road which is dotted with potholes.

Even a brief spell of rain turns the road into a trap for commuters, with potholes lying submerged under water for days together which pose a risk.

Local residents said that the tall claims made by the authorities about so-called people-friendly initiatives seem just a PR exercise. “Look at the condition of our roads. They are a trap which lead to road accidents. We are perplexed as 1 km stretch of this road has been left with potholes when the rest of it was repaired. Do they want to float another tender for a 1 km stretch of road?” a local, Aamir Bashir asked.

According to the locals, the road was set to be fully macadamized in 2019 only, but authorities failed to do so. “Few kilometres were macadamized, then the work was suddenly stopped,” another local resident, Nazir Ahmad Dar, said.

The residents say that the local authorities have turned a blind eye towards the issues facing people and “seems they would act only after some tragedy takes place.”

People demanded immediate repair of the 1 km stretch from Main Chowk Drabgam to Pakherpora crossing. “We appeal the concerned authorities to look into this matter so that people are relieved from the day-to-day hardships, especially the pedestrians,” locals said.

When contacted, Farooq Ahmad Naik, the concerned Junior Engineer said that the work was stopped after some dispute erupted among the local people concerning macadamizing the same road. “It happened before I joined as JE for the concerned area. During my last visit, I talked to some respectable residents there and they seemed to cooperate. Hopefully, the road will be completely macadamized in the week to come,” he said.
