Srinagar: Pre-paid customers in Kashmir will have to fetch their identity proof before going for a mobile recharge. Police says that the law was already in place, only its enforcement has been made potent.
The regulation asks the recharge seller to get the complete details of the customer that includes verifying the identity card. The mobile vendor will have to submit the same to the nearest police station.
The mobile companies have shown strong resentment against the move as they are already bearing the losses of a blanket ban on pre-paid SMS service across State since 2010.
“We are opposing the move. We cannot maintain any registry. It is totally useless. Supervising of recharging process won’t help in any ways in dealing with the increasing crime rate,” said a dealer, wishing not to be named.
The move is also seeing resentment from users as they say recharging will be a cumbersome process if they have to fetch details daily.
Dealers are asking customers to register their details in concerned police station, which is not happening at the moment as customer feel a threat to their privacy.
“It is a good joke that a female customer will go to a police station and register her details. It is totally inconvenient for us,” said Syed Ifra.
The telecom dealers while demanding that telecom companies should verify details of every customer fully said sim cards shouldn’t be issued to teenagers.
The dealers have appealed the authorities to take the decision back and let them to work freely or they will go for a strike.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdul Gani Mir said that guidelines are there from the beginning and police has not introduced anything new into the regulations.
