During last four and a half months, the hospital has recorded deaths of at least 382 infants. In its notification (SHRC/2011/223/1116 dated 22/05/2012) the Commission, after taking suo-moto cognizance, had asked the hospital authorities to submit report of alleged doctors’ negligence which had led to death of two infants last year.
“After the Commission took suo-moto cognizance of the death of two infants in G B Pant Children Hospital on 06/08/2011 and 07/08/2011 namely Dawood son of Aijaz Ahmad resident of Safa Kadal and Safiya daughter of Bilal Ahmad resident of Beerwa Budgam, the parents of the deceased are hereby informed to appear in this Commission on 20/06/2012 and file their rejoinder or further presentation,” the notification states. Secretary SHRC Tariq Ahmad Banday told Greater Kashmir that the Commission had taken cognizance of G B Pant Hospital mess in 2011 when three children had died. ”We had asked them to submit the reports in the deaths of the children but they did not submit the report,” he said, adding that they had sought report from even Commissioner Secretary Health, Medical Superintendent and others. Banday said the Commission would issue notices to the concerned authorities if they failed to submit their responses by June 6 this year. “Since it is going worse in the hospital with children dying at an alarming pace, we will wait till June 20. If they fail to submit their responses, notices will be issued to them,” the Secretary said.
