Slain Samba teacher visited school to bid adieu to colleagues

KULGAM — The lady teacher from Samba district of Jammu region had been transferred a day before her killing on Tuesday.

Rajni Bhalla, wife of Raj Kumar, was posted at Government High School Gopalpora in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. She was staying at Chawalgam village of the same district along with her husband Raj Kumar who is also a teacher.

Official sources told news agency Kashmir News Trust that a transfer order had been handed over to the slain lady teacher on Monday by the Head Master of the school. “The transfer order had been received by the school from the Direction Office and on the same day, it was handed over to Rajni Bhalla.”

Rajni, as per sources, had gone to Gopalpora school on Tuesday to inform her colleagues about the transfer and say bye to them, but before leaving the school for good, she fell to the bullets of suspected militants.

“Rajni and her husband were posted in Kashmir after getting government jobs. Both were Schedule Caste and from a downtrodden family,” said former MP Nazir Ahmad Laway.

Chief Education Officer Kulgam confirmed that the slain lady teacher had already been transferred to Chawalgam from Gopalpora High School.

The transfer of the slain teacher snowballed into a controversy after the former Rajya Sabha member Nazir Laway alleged that she had not been transferred from ‘danger zone’ to ‘safe zone’, even after the directions from the LG, a claim refuted by the CEO Kulgam Muhammad Ashraf Rather who said that date mentioned in the transfer order clearly proves that the ill-fated teacher had been transferred to her staying place of Chawalgam.
