SRINAGAR — A couple of corporators on Monday demanded thorough probe into the allegations leveled by a journalist about the fraud committed while purchasing the disinfectants by Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

Corporator from Kathi Darwaza, Syed Muhammad said that a journalist has leveled serious allegations which the Mayor and officers of SMC have refuted. However, the journalist is sticking to his claims that he has evidence and there is more to come.

“Best would be that Mayor suo moto refers this to Crime Branch or ACB for fair probe,” he said and sought intervention of Lieutenant Governor.

The Corporator said that the motive of the SMC should be to weed out corruption and not to encourage those who propagate it. “The allegations are of serious nature and mere statements won’t work at this time but a through probe should be undertaken. We have every right to question Mayor, Deputy Mayor and those who are at the helm of affairs,” he said.

Pertinently, journalist Majid Hyderi had claimed that there is a big scam in Srinagar Municipal Corporation. He claimed that a multi-crore scam has surfaced as disinfectants have been purchased at exorbitant Rs. 1530 per liter from a favorite man while market rate is only Rs. 605.

Another Corporator Abdul Wahid Dar from Zakura said that if people involved in alleged scam are innocent, they need to address a press conference and themselves demand a probe into these allegations.
