BARAMULLA — A joyful picnic took a tragic turn for a family when two teenage girls got washed away in Ferozpur Nallah at Drang area of Tangmarg that falls within the limits of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Police recovered the bodies of both girls related to each other and are believed to be maternal cousin sisters.

The duo along with three other family members had gone to Drang for a picnic. Reports said that gushing waters swept away five members, three were rescued while two girls died in the incident.

Eyewitnesses said that at least five persons including the two deceased girls lost balance and fell into the gushing waters and got swept away.

One of the persons who was rescued by people said that they stepped into the stream to take some photographs. “We hadn’t clicked any photograph when speeding water washed us away. We don’t know where from this water came,” he said.

A police official said that prima facie it seems that both girls were hit by sharp edged stones and died after sustaining critical injuries.

He identified the deceased girls as 18-year-old Aisha Bilal, daughter of Bilal Ahmad Khan of Nawabazar area of Srinagar and 16-year-old Utba Ashraf, daughter of Muhammad Ashraf of Bemina Srinagar.

The official said that three other family members were rescued and are stable in the hospital.
