Three militants killed, two soldiers injured in Shopian gunfight

SRINAGAR — Three unidentified militants have been killed and two Army troopers were injured in an ongoing encounter at Jan Mohalla area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday.

Official sources said that three militants have been killed as well two Army soldiers were injured in an ongoing encounter, however identity of the slain militant is yet to be ascertained.

Both the soldiers have been shifted to 92 Base hospital for treatment.

Earlier, the gunfight broke out between militants and a joint team of Police, Army’s 44RR and CRPF in Jan Mohalla in main town of Shopian.

As the joint team encircled the suspected spot following launching of a cordon-and-search operation, the hiding militants fired which was retaliated, triggering off the gunfight.

“Chief of proscribed (militant) outfit AGuH (JeM) is trapped. Operation is going on. Further details shall follow,” Police said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, an officer said that the joint team has been trying to save a mosque in the area. “The operation is likely to prolong,” he said.
