Government forces on high alert

SRINAGAR — Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers were killed while two others were injured in a hit-and-run attack by militants in Lawaypora outskirts of Kashmir capital Srinagar on Thursday.

Sources said that suspected militants on Thursday afternoon attacked the CRPF party deployed in the Lawaypora area by firing at them indiscriminately. In the incident, four CRPF troopers suffered injuries among which an ASI of the 73 battalion, identified as GD Manga Ram Dev Barman, succumbed on the way to hospital while another died after being shifted to hospital.

“Driver of the vehicle which was attacked upon succumbed to the injuries,” OPS Tiwari, a spokesman of CRPF, said. He identified the driver as Ashok Kumar, a resident of Chandigarh.

Two more injured CRPF men are being treated in a hospital, whose condition is stated to be stable.

“The CRPF personnel from 73 battalion where discharging ROP duties when they were attacked by some militants at Dilshan hotel and Noora hospital area. Four of them were injured and one of them (ASI) succumbed later,” OPS Tiwari said.

Sources said militants decamped with an Ak-47 rifle from the CRPF men during the attack.

Police in a tweet said that Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone, Vijay Kumar and all ranks of police pay tributes to the duo and stand with their families at “this critical juncture”.

Meanwhile, entire area was cordoned off immediately to nab the fleeing militants, official said.

When this report was filed, however, no arrests were made.
