
SRINAGAR — Two minor girls who were shifted to hospital after they drowned in stagnant waters at Zewan area of Srinagar, breathed their last at the hospital, police said.
The deceased had drowned in stagnant waters near stone quarries at Zewan area of Srinagar along with three other girls. Though police rescued all five, two developed breathing issues and were shifted to Sub District Hospital Pampore, where they breathed their last.
“Yes two girls who were shifted to SDH Pampore passed away,” Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pantha Chowk, Sajad Bukhari said.
Police identified the deceased girls as Rounak (16) and Rutba (14). Bodies of the two deceased girls are being handed over to their families in Zewan after performing medico-legal formalities.
Earlier, eye-witnesses had said that many children including girls were playing on the eve of Eid and at least five of them slipped into the stagnant rainwater near stone quarries at Zewan.
Locals informed police and later carried out joint rescue operation. Three were rescued immediately and were alright but two developed breathing issues and were shifted to SDH Pampore.
