Srinagar: Two militants were killed by police in Padgampora on Sunday afternoon when they fired on an escort of top police officials who were returning from Awantipora from Pulwama town, police said. One militant managed to escape from the spot.

Director General of Police, Dr S. P Vaid said that two militants were killed by police in Padgampora.

“Three militants were traveling in a Maruti car when they attacked the vehicle of police officials who were returning on the same route from Awantipora to Pulwama. The policemen retaliated the fire and killed two militants. One of them escaped,” Vaid said.

DGP said that the incident took place at Padgampora area near Awantipora in Pulwama.

IGP Kashmir Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gilani said that the police were returning from Awantipora after attending an election review meeting with electoral officials in Awantipora.

“The identity of the two militants, who probably belong to HM, is being ascertained,” IGP said.

However, reports said that the two militants were identified as Farooq Ahmad Hurrah of Nazimpora in Shopian district and Rayees Ahmad of Bellow, Rajpora in Pulwama district.
