SRINAGAR — Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with a joint team of Police, Army and CRPF in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

“On a specific input regarding presence of (militants) in Chakoora area of Shopian, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, 34 RR and 178 BN CRPF in the area,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.

“During the search operation, as the presence of (militants) got ascertained they were given opportunity to surrender, however they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated leading to an encounter,” it said.

In the ensuing encounter, he said, two militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. “The identification and affiliation of the killed (militants) is being ascertained,” the spokesperson said, adding, “Incriminating materials including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation.”

The last rites of the killed (militants) shall be performed after conducting their medico-legal formalities including collection of DNA, he said.

“In case any family claims the killed terrorists to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification at PCR Kashmir Srinagar and participation in last rites at Handwara,” he added.
