Valley shuts on first day of Municipal Polls in Kashmir

Srinagar: Kashmir valley is observing a complete shutdown today as the polling for municipal wards began.

Reports of complete shutdown were received from all the district headquarters of the valley including capital city Srinagar.

All business establishments are closed while traffic is also off the roads. “A very thin movement of private transport is visible on the roads in Srinagar,” witnesses said.

The joint resistance leadership has called for a complete shutdown and also asked the people to boycott the polls.

Meanwhile, train services were suspended for security reasons in the Kashmir valley, on the first of the four phased Urban Local Bodies (UBL) and Panchayat polling today.

A senior railway official told, “We have suspended all trains in the Kashmir valley after an advisory was received from police last night.

He said no train will chug on Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region. Similarly, no train will chug on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir, he said. (KNS)
