SRINAGAR — Imtiyaz Rashid Chashti has resigned from the basic membership of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (JKPC), citing serious objections to recent remarks made by the party leadership in reference to the institution of the Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir.
In his resignation letter addressed to party president Sajjad Lone, Chashti said his decision was guided by faith, conscience and moral responsibility. He stated that as a Muslim and a Kashmiri, he holds the institution of the Mirwaiz in the highest religious and ethical regard, beyond the realm of political differences.
Chashti said that any expression or statement that undermines the dignity and sanctity of the Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir was unacceptable to him and conflicted with his personal beliefs. He emphasised that while political disagreement and ideological debate are legitimate aspects of democratic politics, disrespect towards revered religious institutions cannot be justified.
Clarifying his position, Chashti said his resignation should not be interpreted as personal animosity towards any individual within the party. He maintained that his decision was purely principled and rooted in respect for religious traditions and personal conviction.
