Srinagar: The Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday expelled its sitting MLA Syed Bashir Ahmad from the party’s basic membership.
Ahmad, who represents Rajpora constituency of Pulwama, was not given a mandate by the party for the upcoming assembly elections and the candidature instead went to noted economist, Haseeb A Drabu.
“The party’s disciplinary committee took the decision against Syed Bashir,” the PDP said in its statement.
The committee is headed by senior party leader Abdul Rehman Veeri.
“The decision was taken in view of many complaints against Syed Bashir Ahmad for his anti-party activities,” Veeri said in the PDP statement.
Syed Bashir expressed ignorance about the party’s decision. “I have not been communicated about it,” he said.
Asked about the party’s accusations against him, Ahmad said, “They have the power to take decisions. They can say anything. Is there any proof with them that I am carrying out anti-party activities?”
He said a few days ago he attended a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Pulwama to take review of relief and rehabilitation work post floods. “I attended the meeting as local MLA. Mehbooba Ji also attended the all party meeting which was called by the government after the flood,” he said.
Asked on his future plans, Ahmad evaded a direct response. “We are still grappling with post flood situation in entire Kashmir.”
Meanwhile PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has nominated Vikramadatiya Singh and Haseeb A Drabu as members of the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC).
