SRINAGAR — Sarjan Barkati, popularly known as “Azadi Chacha,” is set to contest the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election from jail, following a precedent set by jailed politician Er Rashid, whose son Abrar Rashid led his Lok Sabha campaign.

Barkati’s nomination form has been filed by his daughter, who is expected to lead the campaign on his behalf while he remains incarcerated.

Barkati gained prominence for leading large gatherings and rallies during the 2016 unrest in Kashmir, marked by his slogans and public speeches.

The cleric was arrested on August 28, 2023, by the State Investigation Agency (SIA), in connection with allegations that he had orchestrated a fundraising campaign and misused the funds for radical activities in Kashmir.
