PULWAMA — A one-day cricket tournament, organized under the Nasha Mukht Bharat (Drug-Free India) campaign, was held at Cricket Ground Newa on Wednesday to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle and deter substance abuse.
The event, arranged by the Block Development Office (BDO) Newa, saw participation from four teams comprising employees of the Rural Development Department—Pulwama, Tral, Newa, and Dadasara. Many local youth also participated in the programme.
The tournament featured three 12-over-a-side matches, all scheduled for the same day. Dadasara emerged victorious in the first match against Pulwama, securing their spot in the final. However, the second match between Newa and Tral was abandoned due to persistent rain, with no further play possible.
Despite the weather disruptions, the tournament succeeded in spreading its core message: fostering positivity through sports and steering clear of drugs. Officials as well as players emphasized the importance of physical activity and constructive engagement in building a healthier society.
BDO Newa, Zahoor Ahmad Hadi, the organizing body, expressed satisfaction with the event’s turnout and pledged to host more such initiatives in the future to reinforce community spirit and wellness.
Final Standings:
- Dadasara advances as the sole confirmed finalist.
- Newa vs Tral match abandoned due to rain.
The tournament concluded with a call to youth and employees alike to embrace sports and reject substance abuse for a brighter, addiction-free future.
