Convene donor meet for flood-hit J&K: Mirwaiz to OIC

Srinagar: Moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference on Thursday asked Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to organise a donor conference involving member states and other international bodies for formulating a joint strategy for rehabilitation and reconstruction of flood-hit Jammu and Kashmir.
In a letter to OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani, Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq asked the grouping of Muslim-member states to convene a donor conference including UN agencies and other international organisations, including Gulf Cooperation Council, Islamic Solidarity Fund for Development and Islamic Development Bank.
“Through this donor conference, the OIC could formulate a joint strategy on how best to provide support to humanitarian and reconstruction/rehabilitation efforts in Kashmir and seek the donor pledges and form the partnerships that will be needed for this,” the Mirwaiz said.
He also requested the OIC to send a fact-finding mission to Kashmir as soon as possible to understand the needs and situation on ground and work out viable modalities for providing support to the humanitarian and reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts.
“OIC member states with embassies in New Delhi could form a joint team and organise a visit of their diplomats to Kashmir,” he said.
The Mirwaiz expressed hope that the Government of India will not hinder international humanitarian aid from reaching Kashmiris.
“We trust that the OIC can work out whatever arrangements and modalities are required to ensure that assistance and support effectively reaches Kashmir,” he said.
